Google is now launching new features to help people keep track of heatwaves. This includes new warnings about extreme heat in search, AI-driven tools to manage higher temperatures, and support for organizations working to manage extreme weather events.
Every year, extreme heat kills almost 500,000 people and the number of deaths is increasing, according to Google. To help people stay safe during heatwaves, the company will now roll out new warnings about extreme heat that provide users with information about when a heatwave is expected to start and end, along with tips on staying cool and the health risks associated with heat. The feature will be available in the USA and parts of Europe in the second half of 2023.
Google has also expanded its Tree Canopy tool from 14 to nearly 350 cities globally, which will help cities understand how trees in the city are positioned to better plan where to place, for example, a bus stop in a cooler location.
