The creators of the popular camera app Halide for iPhone and iPad are back with a new app – Orion. The new app is described as “a small, fun app that helps you use your iPad as an external HDMI screen for any camera, gaming console, or even VHS.”

To use the app, you need to have an HDMI capture card that you can connect to your iPad via USB-C. The developers provide recommendations for some such devices. Orion is available for free on the App Store.

Orion goes a step beyond display. By default, inputs could look fuzzy on an iPad’s retina display. (Why? The Switch runs a modest 1080p resolution, and even if it ran at a higher resolution, most adapters on the market can only run 60 frames per second at 1080P.)

Orion sharpens those low resolution inputs with an AI powered upscaler!

There are other apps similar to Orion coming to the App Store that can also do the basic task of displaying HDMI inputs (and some, like Capturino, that are specifically for pro camera monitoring). But if you’re a lover of video nostalgia from the ’80s and ’90s, Orion might be a good one to try out. There’s even an unboxing experience!
