Mercedes is now joining the AI hype and will soon begin beta testing OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, in its cars.
ChatGPT will be integrated into the voice-activated assistant that Mercedes already offers in some of its vehicles through their MBUX infotainment system. Mercedes and Microsoft, who will conduct the ChatGPT beta test through their Azure cloud service, state that the chatbot will allow Mercedes drivers to ask more complex questions to the smart assistant in their cars.
The conversation between the driver and the smart assistant will also become more natural as there will be the ability to ask follow-up questions to ChatGPT, something that Mercedes’ current smart assistant lacks support for.
The integration of ChatGPT with Microsoft in our controlled cloud environment is a milestone on our way to making our cars the center of our customers’ digital lives. Our beta program boosts the existing Hey Mercedes functions such as navigation queries, weather requests and others with the capabilities of ChatGPT. This way, we aim to support conversations with natural dialogues and follow-up questions, says Markus Schäfer, who is Mercedes Group’s CTO for Development and Procurement.
ChatGPT for MBUX will be available to approximately 900,000 Mercedes owners in the US market starting from yesterday.
