Movie trailers are a crucial tool for promoting upcoming productions to a wide audience. In the second quarter of 2022, TV commercials and social media were the most popular ways for adults in the United States and Canada to discover new films, with 49.9% and 33.1% of respondents citing them, respectively. The Walt Disney Company, a major player in the market, has increased its advertising spending continuously since 2018. In 2021, Disney’s ad spending totaled $5.5 billion, over 110% more than five years prior.

Online movie trailers can also generate buzz for upcoming titles on the internet. As of September 2021, 75% of internet users aged 18-44 in the US watched or streamed movies at least once a week. Fans of certain films continue to discuss and engage with them online for years after their theatrical release. As of January 2023, the Harry Potter franchise and “Titanic” had approximately 72 million and 53 million Facebook fans, respectively.
