Microsoft stated in a support document that it will be discontinuing support for Cortana in Windows, the smart assistant that has been used for various tasks within Microsoft’s operating system.
Microsoft introduced Cortana for the now-defunct Windows Phone in 2014, initially positioning it as a competitor to Apple’s Siri assistant. Later, the voice-activated assistant also made its way to Windows and other Microsoft applications. However, at present, Microsoft seems to be fully focused on AI-driven GPT-based assistants like Windows Copilot, which likely led Microsoft to deem it unworthy of investing further resources into Cortana.
By the end of the year, Microsoft will stop supporting Cortana on Windows. However, the assistant will still be available in Outlook mobile, Teams mobile, Teams display, and Teams rooms. The exact duration of its availability in those platforms remains to be seen.
