The two analysis firms IDC and Canalys have released figures for how computer sales looked during the first quarter of the year and it is probably not very pleasant to read for those working in the industry.

Computer sales

According to the newly released statistics from IDC, 56.9 million personal computers were sold during the first quarter of 2023. That is a decline of 29 percent compared to the 80.2 million computers sold during the same period last year. Apple, which usually does not tend to be very sensitive to declines in the computer market, appears to have been hit particularly hard. Apple’s sales of Mac computers fell from 6.9 million sold computers in Q1 2022 to 4.1 million sold computers in Q1 2023, a decline of just over 40 percent.

PC worldwide shipments

It should be noted that the figures from IDC and Canalys differ slightly. This is because they are estimates, as some companies do not themselves release the exact number of units they have shipped to stores and other retailers. Below and above is a table showing quarterly sales of desktop computers and laptops since 2017, as well as a table showing sales from the world’s five largest computer manufacturers during the first quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2022.
