New York police have launched a new initiative encouraging car owners to install Apple’s AirTags in their vehicles to reduce the number of car thefts in the city.

In a tweet, the NYPD wrote that an AirTag can help police and owners locate the car if it is stolen. In a video, car owners are instructed on how to install the AirTag in a suitable place in the car.

During a press conference, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the city will give out 500 free AirTags to car owners in Castle Hill, Soundview, and Parkchester, where car thefts from Hyundai and Kia vehicles have increased by 548 percent.
