Noted leaker Mark Gurman writes in his latest newsletter that the MacBook Pros with the M3 chip currently being tested have either 36 or 48 GB of memory.

Apple M3 chip

This could mean that these machines might have more memory, but for most people, it’s not very interesting as few buy fully loaded top-tier computers. More importantly, neither 36 nor 48 is divisible by eight; instead, they are divisible by twelve. Today’s cheapest and simplest M1 and M2 chips come with 8 GB of memory, which is actually sufficient for most tasks. However, if you’re planning to keep the machine for a long time, multitasking heavily, and can afford it, I recommend upgrading to 16 GB of memory.

But that comes at a cost. If it turns out that the M3 chips will have memory in 12 GB increments, it could mean that Apple is finally providing the base model with 12 GB instead of 8 GB. This would actually allow even more users to be content with the memory that comes with the base version. Which would be nice, as long as the machines cost the same to purchase, of course.
