Starfield is the first new universe in 25 years from Bethesda Game Studios, the award-winning creators of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4. In this next generation role-playing game set amongst the stars, create any character you want and explore with unparalleled freedom as you embark on an epic journey to answer humanity’s greatest mystery.

Starfield

Bethesda’s first new RPG franchise, the open-world space adventure, Starfield. Starfield will arrive exclusively on Xbox Series X and S as well as PC. Starfield is launching September 6, 2023. Its original release date was planned for November 11, 2022.

The Storyline

Starfield storyline

Starfield’s main story is a bit of an enigma. Humanity has explored a lot of space, so the next frontier mystery is something to do with a ring-like artefact. This is where the Constellation organisation comes in forming “the last group of space explorers”, which the player’s character will surely join as part of the main quest.

Starfield is a sci-fi action RPG described as a wholly new, next-generation experience set in an entirely new space-themed world. It takes place within The Settled Systems, a region of the galaxy that stretches outward from our Solar System for around 50 light-years.

Around the year 2310, the game’s two most powerful factions, the United Colonies and the Freestar Collective, fought a deadly Colony War, and the game takes place 20 years after this event. With the groups living under an uneasy truce, players take control of a customisable character who is a member of Constellation, a space exploration organisation.

Across this adventure, we can expect Starfield players to encounter all manner of factions such as the Freestar Collective, a libertarian confederation and one of two main governments in the Settled Systems, and the pirate-like Crimson Fleet. And according to Bethesda, you don’t have to worry about missing out on a faction’s quests if you choose another.

Gameplay

Starfield gameplay

While the Starfield gameplay appears to be drawing heavily from other popular science-fiction. If you’ve played any of the studio’s Fallout or The Elder Scrolls games you’ll know what that means: wide open spaces and settlements to explore, progression systems that reward you for investing time in the elements of the game that you enjoy, and an overall structure that leverages choice and consequence.

Starfield will also include gameplay elements that are new to Bethesda games, such as flying ships in outer space, as well as a more considered focus on resource management, crafting and base building, and real-time combat with firearms. Like Bethesda’s previous RPGs, you’ll be able to switch between a first- and third-person perspective at will.

One of the most exciting new features in Starfield is the ability to clamber into a spaceship and explore outer space. You’ll be able to pilot your ship freely within systems and engage in ship-to-ship combat, which are two elements of the Starfield experience that Bethesda is keen to dial into. Starfield ship building has been confirmed, giving you the capacity to modify every aspect of your vessel.

Starfield: Official Gameplay Reveal

Bethesda has confirmed that the Starfield crafting and research systems are a huge part of the game. Not only will you be able to unlock mods and gear for your explorer – including the ability to improve your favourite weapons and your space suit – but you’ll also be able to heavily invest in outpost expansions.

Both third person and first person viewpoints are in Starfield. Whether you like staring down the barrel of a gun, or at your player character’s cool new space threads, Starfield will offer up both first and third person points of view for players to enjoy.

Starfield will have alien races and multiple planets to explore. It may be a more serious approach to space exploration but there will be aliens to interact with. In quite what capacity, Bethesda isn’t yet revealing. But with the news that the game will also feature Skyrim style cities and settlements across multiple planets, we’re hoping that we’ll run into a fair few alien habitats, too.
