Sony introduced the portable speaker system HT-AX7 the other day. It consists of three small wireless speakers that together create immersive home theater sound. The best part? The speakers are battery-powered, so you can skip the wires.

Sony speakers easily connect to your computer, tablet, or mobile device via Bluetooth – and voila, you have a portable home theater. The idea is that you can enjoy surround sound wherever you are, whether it’s in the living room, bedroom, terrace – or while traveling.

The new Sony speakers are aimed at audio enthusiasts who don’t want to compromise on their audio experience, even when they are on the go. It promises significantly bigger and better surround sound than what you would typically expect from regular portable Bluetooth speakers.

The HT-AX7 utilizes 360 Spatial Sound Mapping, a technology we know from Sony’s soundbars. It creates so-called phantom speakers that give the impression of sound coming from the front, back, and above, resulting in a more solid sound image.

HT-AX7 does not use encoded audio formats like Dolby, but instead utilizes the standard stereo audio track to create surround sound. This is achieved through Sony’s proprietary upmixing algorithm, which analyzes the audio signal and separates the different sound effects.

Since Sony speakers are based on Bluetooth connectivity, they do not have physical audio inputs such as HDMI ARC. The idea is for them to be used with completely wireless displays such as tablets and mobile devices. Or perhaps a portable projector?

Of course, HT-AX7 can also play audio from a TV, but without high-resolution audio formats like Dolby Atmos. For this purpose, Sony recommends stationary soundbar speakers like HT-A5000 or the recently launched HT-S2000.

Sony HT-AX7 will be available on store shelves in September.
