It seems that Meta is eager to start competing with Twitter, and now some more information has leaked about how that might happen.
Lia Haberman, who writes the ICIMY newsletter, has obtained a leaked presentation slide showing what appears to be a Twitter-like service from Instagram. You can check out the leaked image above. Judging from it, Instagram’s service closely resembles how Twitter looks today.
According to Haberman’s source, Instagram’s “Twitter service” is currently operating under the code names “P92” and/or “Barcelona.” Users will be able to log in with their Instagram accounts and make posts of up to 500 characters, including images and videos.
The leak also mentions that the service will be compatible with the decentralized Twitter competitor Mastodon:
Soon, our app will be compatible with certain other apps like Mastodon. Users on these other apps will be able to search for, follow and interact with your profile and content if you’re public, or if you’re private and approve them as followers.
Meta has not yet commented on the leak regarding a potential Twitter competitor linked to Instagram. However, in March, the company did tell Platformer about things on their agenda for the future:
We’re exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests.
