A sequel to 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home sounds like a no-brainer, right? The film made a tremendous amount of money (close to $2 billion) for Sony and Marvel. Plus, it ended with a frustrating cliffhanger where Peter Parker had been forgotten by all his friends.

But so far, we haven’t heard any clear announcements. Sony hopes to make a new Spider-Man trilogy, but film number 4 is on hold as long as the strike continues.

Even Tom Holland, 27, is not entirely certain that he will return in the role of Peter Parker. Holland tells Inverse that “there are some exciting things going on”: If it actually happens, who knows? But right now, it looks pretty bright, so we’ll just have to wait and see.”

In another interview, Holland says, “if I get to play Spider-Man for the rest of my life, I’ll be the happiest person in the world.” But again, there’s a “but”:

“Should we find a way to tell his story and do justice to [Spider-Man], we will do so,” he said. “But if we can’t find a way to compete with the third one [Spider-Man: No Way Home], he’ll swing off into the sunset.”
