Indiana Jones, The Flash, Ethan Hunt… The summer box office is filled with heroes and grand action-adventures. But the real battle for the moviegoers will be between a cheerful plastic doll and a gloomy physicist.

July 21 is the date when two highly anticipated films will be released simultaneously: Greta Gerwig’s comedy Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s dramatic thriller Oppenheimer. An unexpected clash that has amused film lovers for a long time. And the question is, who will actually emerge victorious from this fight? We might already have an answer.

Barbie

Barbie is expected to gross between $45-55 million during its opening weekend in the US. Oppenheimer will have to settle for $30-35 million, according to experts who work on predicting box office numbers.

What works in favor of Barbie is that it is a more family-friendly film with a lower age rating. With six weeks to go until the premiere, it is also the film that the (American) audience is more aware of. Nolan’s three-hour drama about the true story behind the building of the atomic bomb is geared towards an adult audience and currently not as well-known among a broad audience.

Oppenheimer

Both films have a similar budget of $100 million, but Gerwig and her rosy-colored comedy are currently better equipped for a competitive summer at the box office. At least according to the experts.

We wish both contenders good luck in July and hope that both films deliver!
