The aCropalypse is over. Microsoft has rolled out a bug fix for a vulnerability that could allow malicious individuals to recover cropped parts of screenshots in Windows 10 and 11.

Microsoft fixes screenshot bug in Windows

According to Microsoft, the issue (CVE-2023-28303) affects the built-in apps in both Windows 10 and 11. However, it only applies to images that have been taken, saved, edited, and then saved over the original file, and those that have been opened in the Snipping Tool, edited, and then saved in the same location. Screenshots saved as a new file have never been affected by the bug.

Updates for the built-in apps can now be downloaded from the Microsoft Store in Windows. As for images already posted online, it’s just a matter of accepting the situation or removing the images.
