Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that the iPhone screen will start functioning as a ‘smart screen’ when Apple releases iOS 17 later this year.
This means that iPhones will have the ability to display things like weather, calendar events, and notifications on the lock screen when the phone is in a horizontal position. This could be useful, for example, if the phone is placed on a desk while working or on a nightstand next to the bed.
Gurman also suggests that this functionality may come to the iPad and iPadOS as well. Apple is likely to unveil the new lock screen functionality of iOS 17 at their WWDC developer conference, which kicks off on June 5th.
