In the German city of Fürth, an experiment was conducted over the weekend to hold a sermon that was co-authored by OpenAI’s artificial intelligence and the 29-year-old theologian and philosopher Jonas Simmerlein.

Protestants attend AI-generated service in Germany

In the above clip, you can catch a glimpse of the AI event in Fürth.

The service was performed by digital avatars displayed on a screen, with around 300 attendees in the audience who wanted to listen to the ‘AI sermon.’ The reactions to the service appear to have been mixed.

Many thought that the AI did a good job, while some felt that the AI’s delivery lacked the soul and emotion that a human preacher can provide. The AI-led sermon was part of the German event ‘Deutscher Evangelischer Kirchentag,’ which takes place every other year and usually attracts tens of thousands of believers to the host cities.
