The Spanish satellite company Sateliot recently launched the first 5G satellite in what will become a global 5G network built with satellites in orbit around the Earth.

Sateliot calls its first satellite “Groundbreaker” and it is said to be the first satellite in space that can communicate via the 5G standard. However, Groundbreaker and the other satellites that Sateliot will launch in the future are not intended to be used for 5G communication via mobile phones. Instead, Sateliot plans to offer its services to businesses and others who want to communicate with their IoT devices via 5G where there are currently no 5G networks.

When Sateliot’s 5G network in space is fully built, it is planned to consist of 250 satellites. The company plans to launch an additional four satellites at the end of this year and 60 satellites next year. Around 2026, Sateliot hopes to have all 250 satellites in the network in place.

Below is a picture of Sateliot’s Groundbreaker satellite and a video clip where Sateliot talks a little more about its space-based 5G network.
