Venba is a narrative cooking game, where you play as the main character an Indian mom, who immigrated to Canada with her family in the 1980s. This game takes place over the course of several years. Players will cook various dishes and restore lost recipes, hold connecting conversations and explore in this story about family, love, loss and more.
Gameplay
The core gameplay involves Venba trying to restore her lost recipes. The recipe book gets damaged when she moves to Canada. Venba’s mother’s old cookbook that contains the recipes, has instructions that are smudged, or do not make sense to someone unfamiliar with certain utensils or ingredients. Through trial and error you will help restore the lost recipes to cook delicious mouth watering dishes that serve as a connection to the home left behind.

Much of the media relates to immigrant stories by mostly focusing on the second-generation children, rather than their parents. Venba however will be told from the perspective of the mother, and how cooking becomes a way for her to keep in touch with her roots.
Visai Games had to deal with the challenge of making a cooking game that is interesting to players who are familiar with the recipes, without making the game too difficult for those who are not. The game might introduce players to Tamil cuisine, the recipes have to be accurate and representative.
Initially, the developers struggled making good puzzles out of the recipes, as these recipes are usually quite long and complicated. It was also challenging to create puzzles out of them. After doing some research, the developers found that some recipes had puzzles built into them already, they just had to be properly contextualised. This allowed them to make both an accurate and fun game for players.
