Game developer Digital Eclipse has released a trailer for “The Making of Karateka,” a game that also serves as a sort of documentary film about how Jordan Mechner created the classic Apple II game, Karateka.

The Making of Karateka

Mechner, already a university student at the time, created the nearly 40-year-old Karateka. A few years later, he developed another classic game: Prince of Persia. In addition to navigating through the interactive documentary about Karateka, the playable versions of both the original game, a later version of the game, and a playable prototype of the game Deathbounce, which Mechner created in 1982, are also included.

Mechner himself writes in his blog about the upcoming game/documentary film:

What they’ve built around my 1984 kicking-punching debut is so much more than a game remaster, I’m still trying to wrap my mind around it.

“The Making of Karateka” will be released for Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo Switch sometime later this year.
