Starfield better watch out because another space game is on its way. Jumplight Odyssey combines a roguelite setup reminiscent of Faster Than Light with a touch of colony management like Rimworld, and has also drawn inspiration from the TV series Star Blazers. When it was announced last year, we only knew that it would be released sometime in 2023, but now we have a specific date to calibrate our maneuvering systems to.
It will be available on Steam on August 21, but not in its final form; it will be in early access. However, they say that it won’t be a very long early access period, as they expect to release the finished game in the first half of 2024. They describe the current state of the game as very sparse, but it features three different gameplay modes with content for players of different types (“the overseer,” “the survivor,” and “the optimizer”).
More specifically, it includes several star systems with different environments to explore, dozens of items to build your space colony with, and a functioning simulation that allows you to keep track of the crew’s lives and relationships.
