Nio has reportedly developed its new electric wagon specifically for Europe. More than a few EV buyers are likely disappointed that Tesla hasn’t built a proper wagon variant of its popular Model 3 sedan.
Chinese automaker Nio is now filling the gap with a wagon version of its Model 3 competitor, the ET5 (not to be confused with the Skywell ET5 electric SUV), which will be launched first in Europe.
The official premiere is set for this summer, but we already get to see the finished Nio ET5 wagon. The model has been approved for production in China, and with that, images from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) have become public.
However, no interior dimensions have been shared, but it is clear that the cargo space measures more than the regular Nio ET5’s 386 liters. According to MIIT’s data, the exterior dimensions are nearly the same as 4790/1960/1499 mm (L/W/H), with the same 2,888 mm wheelbase as before.
The towing capacity that Nio ET5 wagon has been approved for in China is 1,400 kg, and the car has a curb weight of between 2,195 and 2,245 kg. The powertrain is the same as the regular Nio ET5 with all-wheel drive and two electric motors of 150 and 210 kW (204 and 286 hp), respectively, which together provide a system output of 360 kW (490 hp).
Like all Nio EVs, the Nio ET5 wagon will be able to swap battery packs at one of the automaker’s automated stations.
The options are the same as with the regular ET5: a 75 kWh gross pack that mixes conventional lithium-ion cells with cobalt-free LFP cells, a 100 kWh lithium-ion pack, and a full “semi-solid-state” pack of 150 kWh that mixes lithium-ion cells with solid-state cells. The latter aims to enter production by this summer.
The regular Nio ET5 has a WLTP range of 456 and 590 km with the first two packs. We can probably expect slightly lower numbers for the wagon version.
