Snapchat is one of the best social media apps around. What’s more fun than sending disappearing messages to your friends? There are so many features and filters to use in the app it is sometimes hard to understand it all though. One of the features that it most misunderstood is Snapchat score. How is it calculated? What does it mean? What can you do with it? All great questions! Here I’ll explain a little more about your Snapchat score to help you understand how it works.
What is Your Snapchat Score?
Your Snapchat score is the number that appears under your name on your profile. It is a way for Snapchat to gamify the experience of using Snapchat. There is not a lot of transparency on the exact way to get that number. Long story short though, the more you use the app, the higher that number will grow.
How is the Score Calculated?
That question is not easily answered. The Snapchat website itself is pretty cryptic about how they come up with that number. This is what they say on their score info page:
“Your Snapchat score is determined by a super-secret special equation that combines the number of Snaps you’ve sent and received, the Stories you’ve posted, and a couple of other factors.”
As you can see, some of that is fairly straight forward. The Snaps sent and received and Stories posted is an easy way to get your score up. The mysterious part is the “couple other factors” piece of the score.
What Are the Other Factors?
If Snapchat wanted us to know exactly what the factors are, they would have just told us on their page. So, there is no straightforward answer to this question. As I mentioned above, the score is made to encourage people to use the app. This means there is plenty of educated guesses you can find on the internet that suggest what the “other factors” are. There are guesses such as:
• Sending a Snap to Snapchat’s official Team Snapchat handle
• Using the app again after a long layoff
• Maintaining a Snapchat streak with a friend
What Else Does Your Score Tell You?
Unfortunately, your score doesn’t tell you much else since other than your Snaps and Stories, the other factors are secret. One cool feature of the score though is, if you click on it, it will break up into two numbers. These numbers will tell you exactly how many Snaps you have sent vs how many you have received.
What Does Your Score Get You?
Other than bragging rights amongst your friends, your Snapchat score can also earn you trophies. There are certain emoji trophies you can only get by having a high score. The baby, glowing star, sparkles, circled star, explosion, rocket and ghost emoji are all available for your trophy case as you grow your score from 10 (baby emoji) to 500,000 (ghost emoji)!
In Conclusion
The Snapchat scoring system can be a little hard to understand and can seem a bit random at times. There’s not a whole lot of use for it but it is a fun way to compete against your friends and earn trophies in the app. Now that you have a better understanding of how it works, go out there and earn those points!
