Yesterday it happened, 24 years after the original was released, Valve announced Counter-Strike 2. The game will run on Valve’s Source 2 engine and the plan is for it to be released sometime during the summer.

This new game will offer better graphics than any previous Counter-Strike game and the characters’ animations will also be updated. An example of what will be improved is the smoke grenades which will now offer more realistic smoke. Among other things, the smoke will react to lighting, gunfire, and explosions.

Another big news that the game will offer is that the game servers will use something they call sub-tick updates which means that the tick rate no longer affects movement, shooting, or throwing.

The maps will of course be updated to the new game engine, which will mean a total renovation for some maps while other maps will keep their standard layout. Comparison images from some of the maps can be found via the link below.

The game will be a free upgrade to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, although it is unclear exactly when it will be released.
