Tile, the tracking device company, is now launching an anti-theft mode on its tracking devices that only allows the user who purchased the device to see its location.
The idea behind this is to prevent potential thieves from finding tracking devices that owners have placed in cars, bags, or other items they want to keep track of. However, this also makes it easier to use Tile’s devices for stalking people, as the devices are not as easily detectable if a potential stalker, for example, attaches a Tile device to a car or places it in a bag.
Tile hopes to address the stalking problem by requiring users who activate the anti-theft mode on Tile devices to register with a government-issued ID card and a biometric scan of the user’s face. Additionally, the user must agree to a user agreement that allows Tile to share the user’s information with law enforcement agencies and pay a million-dollar fine if convicted of crimes where Tile devices have been used.
Therefore, Tile’s devices will differ from Apple’s AirTag devices, which send notifications to the user’s iPhone if it detects an unauthorized AirTag following the user. There is also an option for Android users to download an app to find out if someone has planted an AirTag on them. Tile also has an app that can alert users if any of their devices are following them, but this will not work on the tracking devices where the anti-theft mode is activated.
