Two days ago, Ford unveiled a new Explorer, electric-powered. This is their first on Volkswagen’s MEB platform, but not the last. More models are on the way, and now there are rumors that the next one will revive a classic name – Capri.

Ford Capri

The model was launched in 1969, lived until 1987, and it was a pretty cool rear-wheel-drive coupe that could be equipped with a six-cylinder engine. But don’t expect a new one with electric power, no no. The new Capri will be a crossover – of course.

Why not continue the strange trend of putting classic names on completely different car models, as Ford began by naming an electric SUV Mustang. Ford is not interested in launching retro models, they say, because these do not move the brand forward. But they don’t think it’s strange to reuse old names.

Amko Leenarts, who is head of European design at Ford, says:

Reviving classic nameplates will be an important tactic for the brand. We want the tension between something that’s got the equity of an older name. The public loves that we’re bringing back nameplates to new territories. Retro designs aren’t moving us forward. It’s always about totally new interpretation: that’s what makes it interesting.
