Iphone 14 is the recently released successor to the previous generation, iphone 13. Although the iphone 14 looks almost identical to the iphone 13, there are quite  a few notable changes that have been made, including a better main camera sensor, some extra safety features and a slightly more powerful Apple A15 Bionic chipset.

If you’re having trouble trying to decide if you want to upgrade from an iphone 13 pro to 14 pro or if you’re not sure whether you want to spend the extra money to buy the iphone 14 pro over the 13 pro, this list of pros and cons should help you gain a little more insight into your dilemma.

Iphone 14 price

Price:

The first thing you probably think about when trying to decide which phone to get is the price. At $699, the iphone 13 is already quite an expensive phone to begin with and unsurprisingly, the iphone 14 pro model isn’t any cheaper. The iphone 14 pro model starts at $799, which was the same as the iphone 13 when it initially came out but has now been lowered at the arrival of the new iphone 14.

Design+Display:

The iphone 14 does look similar to the iphone 13. They are both glass and aluminium with a glossy finish on the back and both iphones also have a ceramic shield on the front, for added durability.

We saw, in the iPhone 13 models, that they changed the design of their two cameras and had them now placed diagonally instead of the two cameras vertically as seen in the previous iPhone models. Iphone 14 has followed this trend and has their two cameras placed the same way.

The new iphone 14 comes in five different colours; Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple and Red. The iphone 13 came in six colours; Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight, Green and Red.

Performance and Battery:

Iphone 14 performance

When Apple had come out with new iphones in the past it would generally mean that the newer iphone would get a new and improved chip, however for the first time the new iphone 14 will have the same high-end chip as we’ve seen in the iphone 13 pro. Though it’s not the exact same silicone that the iphone 13 uses so we will still see an 18% improvement for the iphone 14 over the regular iphone 13.

If you want a new Apple silicon you’ll have to try the iphone 14 pro and iphone 14 pro max because those both use a new 4-nanometer A16 chip.

The new iphone 14 is able to have up to 20 hours of video playback, 80 hours of audio and 16 hours of streamed videos on a single charge. The iphone 13 however only has the power for 19 hours of video playback, 75 hours of audio and 15 hours of streamed videos so there is an improvement in battery life seen in the iphone 14.

Cameras:

Apple prides themselves in upgrading the camera to be better and better every year and the iphone 14 was no different. Like the iphone 13, the iphone 14 has one main camera and an ultra wide angle camera but the iphone 14s main sense is larger this time, offering bigger pixels and a faster f/1.5 aperture and sensor-shift image stabilisation.

All of these added features and upgrades allow for improved quality of photos as well as videos and should be able to deliver even better details with less noise. Night mode has also had a reputation of being a bit slow in the previous generations of iphone however, in the iphone 14 this has been improved with the exposure now twice as fast.

The iphone 14 also had a new true depth front camera with f/1.9 aperture, over the iphone 13s f/2.2, which helps with lowlight. You will also finally receive autofocus on the front facing camera as well.

A new action mode has been released with the iphone 14 in regards to video mode. This mode was created to stabilise the videos taken with the iphone 14 when you’re on the go or when you aren’t able to hold your iphone still when recording. An example video has been released by Apple in order to show you how stable it really is.

Final thoughts:

Iphone 14 vs 13

The iphone 14 does also bring a few interesting upgrades like SOS Emergency satellite connectivity, Crash detection and improvements in low light photography. But the iphone 14 is overall extremely similar to the iphone 13 and only offers minor refinements in the camera, battery and GPU performance.

With this in mind the iphone 14 could be a good option for those who are upgrading from an older device because at face value there just simply aren’t enough reasons to justify getting the new model over the iphone 13 for most people.
