It seems that the advancement of LCD technology has largely stagnated, as reported by Display Daily. This is confirmed by a source with connections to Merck KGaA, one of the world’s largest suppliers of liquid crystals for screens used by companies like Samsung and LG.
The companies’ research budgets are now being redirected to the development of OLED, microLED, and Mini-LED technologies. Bob Raikes from Display Daily writes:
That shouldn’t have been a surprise to me – I have been talking about the switch to OLED and other emissive displays for the premium end (and later the mainstream) of the display market for a lot of years. Still, after decades of reporting on LC developments, it took a moment to sink in!
This probably doesn’t mean that LCD screens and TVs with LCD technology will disappear from the market anytime soon. There will likely still be a demand for LCD screens, as they are expected to remain cheaper than OLED-based displays.
However, in the long run, we will likely become accustomed to a future where LCD-based screens are no longer available.
