Yesterday, Microsoft’s developer conference, Build, kicked off and they revealed, among other things, that Windows 11 will receive support for opening more file formats used for file compression.
In a blog post, Windows Product Chief Panos Panay writes:
We have added native support for additional archive formats, including tar, 7-zip, rar, gz and many others using the libarchive open-source project. You now can get improved performance of archive functionality during compression on Windows.

This means that Windows 11 users will soon no longer need to install third-party applications to open compressed files and archives in the formats that Windows 11 now supports. This likely also means that applications like WinRAR, WinZip, OpenRAR, and others may face a rather uncertain future.
