According to 9to5Google, Google will no longer send software updates to third-party smart displays that run Google Assistant.

This was announced on a Google Duo support page in a short message. Where it says:

Important: Google no longer provides software updates for these third-party Smart Displays: Lenovo Smart Display (7″, 8″ & 10″), JBL Link View and LG Xboom AI ThinQ WK9 Smart Display. This could impact the quality of video calls and meetings.

It means that, at least for now, only Google’s own smart displays, the Google Nest Hub, will receive new updates and functionality. It is unclear whether Google plans to offer any alternative to third-party smart display manufacturers in the future.

Recently, there have been rumors that Google has scaled back development of its smart assistant, Google Assistant, in favor of AI projects like the chatbot Bard. There is no information yet on whether this is the reason why Google will no longer offer software updates to third-party smart displays. If you have a smart display with Google Assistant from a third-party manufacturer, it will continue to work but will no longer receive any new functionality.
