Last week rumors started circulating that the Japanese company Sega would buy the Finnish game developer Rovio, and now it is confirmed that this will be the case.

Sega appears to be primarily interested in Rovio’s expertise in mobile games and plans to use this to create mobile game versions of some of its current and upcoming games. Above all, Sega seems to be interested in Rovio’s mobile game platform Beacon, which Rovio uses to develop and maintain its games. Rovio writes about Beacon:

Beacon is a powerful technology suite that supports Rovio games throughout their entire lifecycle, including tools that allow game teams to easily develop and bring games to market, profitably grow games through user acquisition, keep players engaged and live operate games, monetize with in-app purchases and ads, and ensure safe gaming experience.

Rovio has a total of around 550 employees across its eight game studios in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, and Turkey. Sega will pay 706 million euros for Rovio.
