BMW continues to develop cars that run on hydrogen. The iX5 is on its way, but you won’t be able to buy it. Instead, some individuals will be able to borrow it and, in exchange, help with evaluating how it is to live with such cars.

Launch of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen pilot fleet

It has already started production, and five units will begin rolling out in the US by the end of the year. But a hydrogen car for the mass market is on its way, and it will arrive sometime after 2025 but before 2030. The reason for the delay is not entirely unexpected because the infrastructure around hydrogen cars has not kept up. More hydrogen filling stations are needed, and it is said that stations are needed every 15o km for it to make sense in the long run. That’s quite a lot. But there are still many car manufacturers who believe in hydrogen and have already invested heavily in the technology, so we’ll see how it goes in the future.
