At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, BMW displayed the Vision Dee. It is not an electric car that you can order now, but a high-tech showcase for technology and innovations that shows how digital future electric cars could look like.

The car in the picture is BMW’s vision of the future, at least according to them. Here we are not talking about range or zero-to-hundred times but about how BMW imagines a compact electric car can look like with a redefined IT and software architecture.

BMW states that Dee stands for Digital Emotional Experience and marks the next step for interaction between “man and machine,” according to the press release.

Digital World Premiere: BMW i Vision Dee – your ultimate companion.

Among other things, there is a new advanced head-up display that can show various information along the entire width of the windshield. A version of the new BMW Head-up Display will be introduced in the Neue Klasse models from 2025. BMW also highlights something they call the Mixed Reality Slider – an integrated touch screen that controls how much digital content you want to see on the windshield.

It also changes color through a new full-color version of E Ink technology that we have already seen on the BMW iX E Ink that was displayed at CES last year.

E Ink

The idea is that you can choose the color of the car yourself. There are 240 different E Ink fields with a total of 32 colors that can be controlled individually. In this way, you can create patterns in different colors and they can be switched in just a few seconds.

Phygital

When approaching the car, it makes a small show with graphic elements, lights, and sound effects. The headlights and grill are a surface that BMW calls “phygital” (physical + digital), which can display a range of expressions and icons and give the car its own face. Not only that, a photo of the driver can be displayed as an avatar on the side window!

Imagine technology infused with a human touch. A machine whose intelligence is emotional rather than artificial. A vehicle with a voice, facial expressions, and true personality. A car that’s more than a means of transportation, but an ultimate companion. Introducing Dee – the first BMW with a digital soul.

The Neue Klasse models will eventually make up more than half of BMW’s sales volume. The first models launched in Neue Klasse will be a sedan in the 3-series segment, followed by a sporty SUV.

BMW also plans to showcase more visions throughout 2023, so stay tuned for the ride.
