The iMac is the computer with Apple’s M chip that has gone the longest time without any hardware updates, but now it finally seems to be time. According to Mark Gurman, Apple is far along in the development of the computer, and mass production should not be too far off. The new iMac model will have the same 24-inch screen size and color options as the current model. Improvements will likely include Apple’s new M3 chip, internal design changes, and the computer’s stand will be manufactured in a new way, although it is unclear if it will change the design.
The M3 chip will be manufactured with TSMC’s latest 3nm process with better performance and energy efficiency. The current iMac model was released in April 2021 with the M1 chip and in seven colors. Gurman expects the new iMac model to be released no earlier than the second half of 2023.
Aside from the iMac, Apple is scheduled to launch about three new Macs between late spring and summer, I’m told. Those three models are likely to be the first 15-inch MacBook Air (codenamed J515), the first Mac Pro with homegrown Apple chips (J180) and an update to the 13-inch MacBook Air (J513).
