Reddit has announced that it will start charging certain companies that use their API, programming interface, to access large amounts of data posted to the platform.
Reddit’s decision to start charging for its data is due to the fact that some companies have begun using large amounts of data from Reddit to train their artificial intelligences. It is known that both Google and OpenAI have used data from Reddit to train AIs such as Bard and ChatGPT, and this is now something that Reddit sees as an opportunity to bring in some extra revenue for the company.
Companies, organizations, and others who do not plan to download large amounts of data from Reddit appear to still be able to do so without having to pay any fees to Reddit.
