According to reports from The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, the Biden administration wants to ban TikTok if the app is not sold by its Chinese owner, ByteDance. The US government has previously imposed restrictions on TikTok and has also introduced new legislation that would give the Secretary of Commerce the authority to ban foreign companies that pose a security threat to the country.
TikTok has proposed a solution where its US operations would be separated from ByteDance, but the negotiations have stalled. TikTok’s CEO, Shou Zi Chew, will testify before a congressional committee next week.
