EA recently confirmed that the upcoming game, The Sims 5, will be free to play when it’s released. This may not come as a complete surprise, as EA now offers The Sims 4 for free and generates revenue by selling various DLC (downloadable content) packs instead.

It seems that The Sims 5 will follow a similar pattern, as the base game itself will not have a cost, and there won’t be a subscription requirement either. The game will also not feature other free-to-play gimmicks such as limited playtime. The base game will receive free updates, but if players want new clothing, activities, or other extra content, they will need to purchase the game’s various DLC packs.

EA also announced that The Sims 5 will not replace The Sims 4. The intention is for these games to coexist for a while after The Sims 5 is released.
