This beginners guide is perfect for any new Diablo players out there, or simply just players that are going to be returning to the series after quite some time. In this beginners guide, you’ll receive information about the basic mechanics of the Diablo IV game, such as new and returning features, how the combat and exploration works, how to level up your character and much more.

What Should You Do First?

If you are a player in Diablo IV that is a complete newbie then it can be extremely overwhelming to have all the systems and menus of the game being thrown in to your face at once, so here is a bunch of stuff in Diablo IV that you should do to hopefully ease you into the Diablo IV experience

Pick A Class

One of the most important decisions that you will have to make in Diablo IV, if not the most important one, will be picking your class for your character. As you look at each one of the five starting classes that you can choose from, you’ll notice that each of them have their own strengths and weaknesses that make them unique, so it is quite important for you to pick one that is going to be able to complement the way that you play the best. For the gamers who enjoy close and personal battles, Barbarians and Druids tend to be the best for you, while if you’d rather keep your distance then Necromancer and Sorcerer are great choices as they rely on spells or minions, and finally you have Rogue who is a mixture of both of these characteristics.

Once you’ve actually successfully managed to complete the main story line with one character, you’ll have the option to skip the whole story when you create a new character if you want to. However, any new characters that you make in this game, without having completed the story with any one of them, will need to work through the whole Diablo IV campaign mode.

Choosing the right class for you personally is quite important as Diablo IV is a long game and you won’t be able to swap between the classes on a single character once you’ve made your choice. Even if you may not be interested in playing as a different class to yours, it’s still quite important to at least have some sort of idea of what all the classes are able to do so that when you pair up with other players you’ll be able to work together as efficiently as possible, working on each others strengths to defeat tough opponents.

Play on World Tier 1 in the Beginning

The various World Tiers that Diablo IV offers can actually be extremely useful to you in becoming more comfortable with the mechanics of the game. The World Tier 1 is recommended for players ranging from level 1 all the way up to level 50, but you’ll be able to change this if you want once you’ve unlocked the World Tier Statue in Kyovashad.

As you move through the World Tiers to a higher one, they’ll each offer more XP bonuses as well as gold than the last, however you’ll also need to be ready because it will also increase your enemies health and strength. So, with that being said you should definitely play on World Tier 1 at least until you get some solid loot in your inventory, even for those gamers who don’t typically enjoy playing games on lower difficulties.

Acquiring And Also Using Portals

As soon as you enter a city where you’ve never been before, you want to try your best to unlock the Town Portal as soon as you can so that you’ll be able to easily fast travel to this location. What you’ll need to do in order to use a Town Portal is find the Waypoint first, which you will usually be able to find located in the centre of every major town. Once you’ve managed to find it, you’ll simply just have to select “Unlock Waypoint”, as shown in the picture below, and you’ll finally be able to use a portal to fast travel to this newly found city. If you do use this portal and teleport to a new city, you’ll experience a warning sign when you’re leaving that town that the portal will be closing.

So, with that being said, if you need a way to return to town quickly and easily from a dungeon to dispose of any extra loot your may be holding or just for whatever reason, but you wish to return to this specific dungeon, make sure not to leave the town because the portal will then close. So, take care of whatever business you may have inside of the town and then use that same portal to return to the inside of the dungeon from which you came.

Change Your Loot Options

By default, if you hop straight into the game and don’t mess with any settings, the item labels will fade away after 10 seconds of being on the ground, but this can easily change this display to be toggleable. This is definitely quite a great setting as there are definitely some times, such as during the heat of a battle, where you will not be able to stop to read or pick up loot laying around. However, if you toggle these settings you can set the item label to last more than 10 seconds so that you’ll be able to stop and read them once your fight is over.

Healing

Learning to heal yourself is easily one of the most essential skills to learn as a player progressing through the expansive open world of Diablo IV. As you start your Diablo IV journey, you’ll be given four potions that you’ll be able to use to replenish your health. You’ll further be able to actually replenish these by speaking to a Healer in town or by activating a Blood Well instead, which you can find throughout the map. You could also come across large red orbs that some enemies will drop occasionally, which can also replenish your health pool.

Upgrading Your Potions

Your character’s potion capacity will be upgraded over time you play the game but to upgrade your healing potions, you’ll instead need access to the Healing Potions Upgrading quest specifically, which is a quest that you’ll receive quite early on in your Diablo IV journey once you’ve managed to reach Kyivashad. Once you’ve managed to acquire this quest, you’ll need to talk to Veroka. After this you’ll be able to upgrade whichever potion you want, not just healing ones, by simply speaking to the Alchemist in any of the major towns.

In order to upgrade a potion, you’ll need to have the required herbs to do so as well as the specific level that you’ll be required to be. When you get your character up to level 10, you’ll want to go talk to an Alchemist in town and then select the “I want to increase the potency of my healing potion” option. You’ll be able to upgrade the strength or potency of your Healing Potion at the Alchemist, but just remember that upgrading will require gold and herbs that you can find all around the world map.

As you progress through the Diablo IV game, you’ll want to make sure to check back with the Alchemist about every 10 levels in order to keep upgrading your potions potency. You don’t have to stress too much about checking your potions upgradability all the time as an icon will pop up next to your potions, within the menu, when you will be able to upgrade them.
