Now vinyl has officially surpassed CDs, at least in the US. According to the annual revenue report from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), vinyl records sold better than CDs in the US last year – for the first time since 1987. Vinyl is said to have sold 41 million copies, while CDs sold 33 million.
The sale of vinyl records has been consistently increasing over the past 16 years according to the RIAA report, and now accounts for 71 percent of revenues from all physical music formats. However, streaming has the largest market share with 84 percent of all music revenues coming from streaming.
