Apple announced some updates to its headphones yesterday, mainly focusing on the AirPods Pro. One of the new features is called “Adaptive Audio,” which is coming to AirPods Pro.

With adaptive sound, the audio for AirPods Pro’s active noise cancellation (ANC) will adjust based on the background noise. Apple states that this is “a new listening mode that dynamically blends transparency and active noise cancellation based on the surroundings, optimizing the experience in every moment. The new listening mode smoothly adapts the noise control experience as the user moves between environments and constantly changing interactions throughout the day.”

In addition to Adaptive Audio, the feature called “Personalized Volume” is also coming to AirPods Pro. It is a machine learning-based feature that learns the user’s preferred volume levels in different environments and adjusts accordingly. Another new feature for AirPods Pro is “Conversation Awareness,” which automatically lowers the volume, amplifies voices, and reduces background noise when the headphones are used for conversations.

Both AirPods and AirPods Max will also receive a new feature for quickly toggling the microphone on and off. On AirPods and AirPods Pro, this can be done by squeezing the stem, while the crown on AirPods Max will be used for this new function.
