Google’s strong focus on artificial intelligence has led to some restructuring of the company, Alphabet’s CEO Sundar Pichai announced yesterday.
Google will now merge DeepMind, the British AI company it acquired in 2014, with Google Brain, the division that has been working on AI within Google’s research division.
The new company will be called “Google DeepMind” and Pichai writes about this:
This group, called Google DeepMind, will bring together two leading research groups in the AI field: the Brain team from Google Research, and DeepMind. Their collective accomplishments in AI over the last decade span AlphaGo, Transformers, word2vec, WaveNet, AlphaFold, sequence to sequence models, distillation, deep reinforcement learning, and distributed systems and software frameworks like TensorFlow and JAX for expressing, training and deploying large scale ML models.

DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis will lead the new company while Google Brain’s AI chief Jeff Dean, considered one of the world’s best programmers, will become research chief at both Google Research and Google DeepMind.
