Researchers, along with Elon Musk, have signed an open letter from the nonprofit organization Future of Life Institute, urging AI companies around the world to pause the development of large-scale AI systems for at least six months due to the “profound risks to society and humanity” that this software could pose, according to the group of researchers.
The letter states that AI development is currently in a race between different companies trying to develop and implement machine learning systems “that no one, not even the creators, can understand, predict, or reliably control.” The letter calls on all AI-focused companies to immediately pause the development of AI systems more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4.
Signatories include author Yuval Noah Harari, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn, politician Andrew Yang, and several other well-known AI researchers and CEOs. However, the letter is unlikely to have any effect on AI development.
