Robot researchers at the Swiss École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) have showcased a new modular robot that they believe could be useful in the space industry in the future.

The robot is called Mori3 and consists of triangular modules that can be connected to form various polygonal structures, as seen in the image above. The idea behind this design is for the robot to be assembled and used for different purposes.

In the video clip below, you can see how Mori3 moves by using some of the modules as legs, as well as how it rolls up into a kind of caterpillar track and moves forward. There are also examples demonstrating a single Mori3 module rolling on its own and multiple modules functioning as a robotic arm.

As of now, there is no information available about whether or when we might see Mori3, or an advancement of it, on board a spacecraft.
