Researcher Masahiko Inami at the University of Tokyo has developed a pair of cyborg arms intended to be attached to a person’s back.

The project is called Jizai Arms, and Inami says he drew inspiration from a horror novel about a man who borrowed a woman’s arms. The wearable arms have so far only been showcased in a dance performance where the arms were part of the choreography.

It is not clear if the arms can be controlled by the person wearing them. In the future, Inami envisions the backpack where the arms are attached could be equipped with other accessories, such as wings or drone rotors. He also sees potential for the arms to be used in a new sport that requires six arms or even to discover new ways of swimming. In other words, Inami has no shortage of visions for his cyborg arms.

JIZAI ARMS: SOCIAL DIGITAL CYBORGS

Currently, it seems more suited as some kind of art installation. You can watch a video clip of the arms being used in the dance performance here.
