It looks like users of X, formerly known as Twitter, will soon have the ability to use the service for making video calls to each other.
X’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino, has confirmed this. In an interview with CNBC, primarily discussing the reason behind the service’s name change from Twitter to X, Yaccarino says:
Think about what’s happened since the acquisition,” she said. “Experiences and evolution into long-form video and articles, subscribe to your favorite creators, who are now earning a real living on the platform. You look at video, and soon you’ll be able to make video chat calls without having to give your phone number to anyone on the platform.
Video calls are likely to fit well into Elon Musk’s plans to transform X into a superapp similar to the Chinese WeChat. Previously, Musk has mentioned that X’s users will also be able to handle financial and banking tasks through X.
Below is a tweet from X’s designer, Andrea Conway, which also seems to confirm that X has video call functionality in the works.
