The American copyright organization National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) is now suing Twitter, alleging that the platform does not do enough to address the unauthorized sharing of music on its platform.
NMPA represents a dozen record labels, including Sony Music Publishing, BMG Rights Management, and Universal Music Publishing Group, and lists around 1,700 songs that have been shared on Twitter without any action taken by the platform to remove them.
NMPA is seeking at least $250 million, in damages for the songs shared on the platform. Unlike most major social media platforms and other services where users can upload music, Twitter lacks licensing agreements with record labels and rights holders whose music is shared on the platform.
Services that have such licensing agreements include TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitch, among others.
