Proton, the company behind the security-focused email service Proton Mail, is now launching its own password manager. Proton’s password manager is called “Proton Pass” and stores login information for various services with end-to-end encryption (E2EE).
In addition to usernames and passwords, it is also possible to store web addresses and email addresses for the services the user has registered for. All encryption and key generation is done locally on the user’s mobile phone with Proton Pass, which means that even if such requirements were made by authorities, Proton would not be able to access this information.
Proton Pass is currently only available in a beta version for Proton’s lifetime users and what Proton calls “Visionary User”. There is currently no information on when Proton plans to open up Proton Pass for public download. When this happens, the service will be free for Proton users.
