Google now supports passkeys, which are meant to be a more convenient and secure alternative to passwords. Passkeys work on all major platforms and browsers, allowing users to log in by unlocking their computer or mobile device with their fingerprint, face recognition, or a local PIN code.
When creating a passkey on your Google account, you no longer need to enter your password or two-factor authentication (2FA) when logging in. According to Google, passkeys offer stronger protection against phishing and data breaches than passwords and other 2FA methods.
Passkeys can be created on most platforms, including iOS and Android. If you create a passkey on iOS, it will be synced between devices via iCloud Keychain. Passkeys cannot be written down or disclosed to unauthorized parties, and if you lose a device with a passkey, you can quickly revoke the passkey in your account settings. Passkeys are built on the standard from FIDO Alliance.
