Solving the Chess Puzzle in Hogwarts Legacy

1. Get through the gate

In order to find this particular Treasure Vault you’ll need to head to the northeastern tip of the Poidsear Coast region, which is located directly east of the Phoenix Mountain Cave Floo Flame.

Once you get here you will be greeted with your first challenge and that is to open the gate, it is quite straightforward as you will just need to cast Depulso on both of the rotating apparatuses until you see them lock into place. The nice thing about this challenge is that you won’t need to worry about using Arresto Momentum to keep these apparatuses from reverting.

In order to learn Depulso you’ll first need to complete Professor Sharp’s Assignment 1 and then attend his Potion Class. This assignment that you will have to complete will revolve around testing three different combat potions, which are Maxima, Edurus and Focus.

2. Beat the chess game

Then back to the mission, once you make your way inside, past the gate, you’ll see a huge chessboard on the floor. When you get in here you want to cast Revelio and it’ll then highlight the white pot, located in the rear of this room. From here you will want to use Transformation to transform this into a chess piece.

The Transformation spell is one of the last non-Unforgivable Curses spells that you will learn in the game through the Professor Assignments, so if you are relatively new to the game you will probably not have unlocked this yet. To get this spell you’ll need to complete Professor Weaslet’s Assignment as well as attend her Transfiguration Class, then once you’ve completed these two things Professor Weasley will then teach you the Transformation spell personally.

Once you use the Transformation spell on the pot it will either turn into a Bishop or a Rook.

  • If your pot is transformed into a Bishop, you’ll have to use the Wingardium Leviosa spell to move this piece directly in front of your Queen piece.
  • On the other hand if you get a Rook, you’ll instead want to use Wingardium Leviosa to place it two spaces from the enemy’s King piece, on the right hand side.

In order for your character to unlock the Wingardium Leviosa spell you’ll need to complete Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1, in which you’ll have to test the Venomous Tentacula as well as the Mandrake plants in combat.

Now after you’ve moved the piece to its designated spot you’ll have checkmated your opponent, which will then cause the black King piece to fall apart piece by piece till it reveals the treasure chest.
