Bloober Team made a name for themselves with games like Layers of Fear, Observer, Blair Witch, and The Medium, which led to them being honored with the opportunity to remake Silent Hill 2. However, the recent release of the remastered version of Layers of Fear (the first and second game) marked the end of a phase they refer to as Bloober Team 2.0.

In an interview with Engadget, one of the studio’s co-founders, Piotr Babieno, stated that 2023 marks the end of an era where they focused on psychological horror. “Right now we are going into Bloober Team 3.0, making mass-market horror.” He further explained that their previous emphasis was on storytelling, atmosphere, graphics, and music, rather than gameplay mechanics.

However, they plan to change that going forward and intend to rely more on action and player interactions, hoping to attract more players to their titles. This approach was adopted when they began development on the Silent Hill 2 remake in 2019. Interestingly, individuals from Konami have stated that a remake of Silent Hill 2 was prioritized because it represents “true psychological horror.”

“We decided that our next titles should be much more mass-market oriented,” Babieno said. “We’d like to talk with more people. We’d like to deliver our ideas, with our DNA, not by environment or storytelling, but by action. So all of our future titles will have a lot of gameplay mechanics. They will be much bigger.”
