E Ink has unveiled a new version of so-called e-paper called Spectra 6. According to the company, the color e-paper reproduces images almost as well as a traditional LCD screen.

The advantage of e-paper compared to LCD screens is that much less energy is required to display things on e-paper. Furthermore, E Ink Spectra 6 can display images up to 200 dpi on the e-paper. Initially, Spectra 6 is intended for use primarily in static digital advertising billboards. It will probably take a while before we see e-paper like Spectra 6 in e-book readers.

Sometime next year, E Ink plans to release digital advertising billboards with Spectra 6, the company said in a press release.
